"The CORE program has helped me to better explore and articulately express how my career practice and my faith inform one another. In meeting one-on-one with a mentor, I have been able to think out loud, lay my interests on the table, and find guidance in my vocation. Spending time with fellow program participants has helped me to meet new people, build relationships, and gain a greater understanding of academics outside of my own at my university. With interests like philosophy and theology that are integrated into my art practice, I feel like I have the support I need to pursue my research, try new things, and ultimately grow as a scholar."

Manuel Martinez

Ph.D. candidate | majoring in Physics

"I plan to use CORE funds to help support my study of the Hebrew language. My main purpose in learning Hebrew is to be able to read the Old Testament in its original language, which will allow me to go deeper into its interpretation; this will help me in being able to bring several passages into perspective and look at the relation they have with our current scientific knowledge (mainly in cosmology).

My ultimate goal is to be able to understand, and explain, how Science and Theology interact."

"I will use the funds from the CORE Fellowship to aid in my formation as a Christian scholar, using the intellectual gifts I believe God has given me to further Christ's cause. In addition I desire also to form a close bond with the CORE Community."

This summer, Evan will be attending a week-long Latin immersion program called CENACULUM  FAMILIÆ SANCTI  HIERONYMI at the Visitation Monastery in Mobile, AL.

Brigitte Waldier

1st year grad | majoring in Speech & Language Pathology

Last summer,  Brigitte spent two months in China on a mission trip with a group from her church. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Iowa in 2016 with a major in Speech & Hearing Sciences.

"In China, I have two goals. First I plan to work within the church planting movement by teaching English to college students, becoming friends with them, and inviting them into the church. In addition, I will be volunteering with hundreds of orphans who have developmental disabilities and teaching them about love and the Lord. I cannot wait to see how these two experiences play into my career as a a Speech Language Pathologist. As an SLP, I plan to travel back to East Asia and work with these students who have never before been provided treatment, so I am excited to explore how to do this from a Christ-centered approach."

"Currently I am integrating both my studies in Marketing & Theology to do full time ministry in Iowa City. This summer, I plan to use the funds to spend two months in China sharing the good news with college students there and learning how to better send more college students from the University of Iowa to do the same thing next summer."
